and sisu is…only named that because it also begins with “si” D: i suuuck. i do think it’s a cute name though, it sounds very singsong. edit: i just found this: "Sisu is a Finnish word that translates roughly to strength of will, determination, perseverance and acting rationally in the face of adversity. The equivalent in English is "to have guts"." it actually fits him quite well!

from “Vasilissa the Beautiful”:

“…"I would ask thee," said Vasilissa, "of the men on horse back. When I came to thy hut, a rider passed me. He was dressed all in white and he rode a milk-white horse. Who was he?"

"That was my white, bright day," answered the Baba Yaga angrily. "He is a servant of mine, but he cannot hurt thee. Ask me more."

"Afterwards," said Vasilissa, "a second rider overtook me. He was dressed in red and the horse he rode was blood- red. Who was he?"

"That was my servant, the round, red sun," answered the Baba Yaga, "and he, too, cannot injure thee," and she ground her teeth. "Ask me more."

"A third rider," said Vasilissa, "came galloping up to the gate. He was black, his clothes were black and the horse was coal-black. Who was he?"

"That was my servant, the black, dark night," answered the old witch furiously; "but he also cannot harm thee. Ask me more."

But Vasilissa, remembering what the Baba Yaga had said, that not every question led to good, was silent.”

I always love the story of Baba Yaga since I was a child, so this is interesting to know the origin of the three horse riders that guide Baba Yaga! Your art style is so lovely...

I love the unique take on Baba Yaga and the riders of the day, night and sun! I have always been fascinated by the concept of the three riders, but I never would've thought I'd see it outside of my book of russian fairytales...
Anyway, your drawing style suits them, this Baba Yaga ended up having very handsome sons:))

25 Feb 2011 07:37 pm

I really like the way you portrayed each horse so that they matched their rider in appearance and attitude.

26 Feb 2011 05:37 am

I haven't read that fairy tale in ages! Nostalgia much ^^,

26 Feb 2011 09:22 am

I really like this side-story! I never heard/read the Baba Yaga story to be honest, so I'm really looking forward for more of your updates!

...What I'm thinking now is, what if Baba didn't have had any sons? And who's the father in this story anyway? XD *I know I'm being a bit silly maybe*

26 Feb 2011 12:30 pm

When I was a kid, I grew up on this Russian story. I found a "tales of the far east" book when i was a little older, and I read another version of the Vasilissa story, the one where she had Baba Yaga's daughter helped her.
